Introducing Dogs Safely

Some tips on how to introduce dogs safely. Read more about this video here.

Taking the Perfect Dog Photo

How I taught Zuri to enjoy having her photo taken and get a good shot at the same time. Read more about this video here.

Fence barking and jumping

Zinnia is learning to come when called instead of barking
and jumping at the fence when she hears noises outside.

Making nail clipping enjoyable

See how Dancer was taught to enjoy having her nails clipped.

To see another method with a larger, very fearful dog, see the video on nail filing further down.

Changing barking and lunging behaviour

A video account of how Diesel's reactive behaviour to scooters was changed using systematic desensitization and counter-conditioning.

Teaching your dog to "wait"

Teaching should be practical and FUN.  Learning to "wait" creates self-control and a dog who is able to respond to requests despite distractions.  It is a way to provide enrichment and stimulation. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exertion and activity.  And never, ever discount the FUN factor for both of you.

Teaching a dog to "leave" something

A tutorial outlining the basic steps I used to train Zuri to leave something, even something she REALLY wanted.

Teaching a dog to "give" something

The final stages of teaching Zuri to bring and give me something she loves and would rather keep - her favourite bone.

Cool dog trick - unveiling a present

I had a present to give to my neighbour, but no wrapping paper. So what does a dog trainer do when she doesn't have any wrapping paper handy?  She spends 60 seconds shaping her dog to unveil the gift and then goes next door to present it!  This is the beauty of using positive reinforcement to teach animals.  It unleashes creativity (in both teacher and student) and makes learning of new tasks so much faster and more efficient the more you use it.  Oh, and it saves you money on wrapping paper and it is SO MUCH FUN!

Introducing a chest harness to
a fearful dog

Introducing your dog to a chest harness - from fear to enjoyment.

Making filing your dog's nails enjoyable

Zuri, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, was extremely fearful of having her nails clipped or filed.  She has been taught to enjoy the process without the use of force or punishment and no need for restraint.

Cool dog trick - walking upstairs backwards

The final product of teaching Zuri to walk upstairs backwards. No force, luring with food, prompting with voice or physical handling was used.  This was achieved purely through clicker training - using a technique known as shaping.  It's truly an amazing way to teach animals.
